TechSoup – then called CompuMentor – was one of the first non-profit organizations in the United States to help other non-profit organizations with the use of computer technology. (For those younger than 50 years this was a time when e-mail was barely used, the fax machine was the exciting new technology of the day and we all used matrix printers with perforated paper with holes on the side to keep the paper on its Place). CompuMentor (now TechSoup) was an outcome for the non-profit organization.

Today TechSoup has built the largest network of non-profit organizations in the world. The TechSoup Global Network has helped more than one million organizations in 236 countries and territories design and implement technological developments to support collaboration and impact. Causes supported by these non-profit organizations include combating domestic violence, providing food to people who need it, helping young people learn coding, providing disaster relief and improving access to education, just to name a few.

The global reach of TechSoup is already amazing. But the non-profit organization is not satisfied with what it has already achieved – it wants to have an even greater impact. By 2021, it plans to distribute $ 4.8 billion of funds through its DPO campaign to non-profit organizations around the world. This is more than three times what the organization currently facilitates. According to TechSoup, the company plans to distribute $ 47,000 in additional funds to the non-profit sector for every $ 100 investment they receive.

TechSoup is directing this $ 11.5 million campaign towards five specific strategic initiatives to grow and expand reach:

1. Marketplace for NGO technology: TechSoup strives to develop its technology offers and opportunities to provide non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with the resources they need to make that technology usable in the non-profit sector. It supports initiatives such as extensive hardware offerings, cloud subscriptions, value-added services, training and better connections with consultants.

2. Global validation and data services: TechSoup builds an API-enabled service that makes its database of validated nonprofits available that can be used and validated worldwide for philanthropic use, including sites such as Airbnb Citizen, Social Impact Experiences and Amazon Smile.

3. Apps for good: The nonprofit organization designs, builds and distributes trustworthy technology apps that support collaboration between nonprofits and enables communities to unite with common apps and common data. An example is an app in a hotel room that helps victims of domestic violence find a safe haven if no accommodation is available.

4. Processes and systems: TechSoup invests in testing, building and refining new marketing and support strategies and strengthening its global network model and capacity.

5. Cooperative technology platform (CTP): This is the product development that supports the first three strategic initiatives and the business processes of the fourth.

The campaign is designed to raise funds quickly to keep pace with the rapid growth of technology. The great thing about it is that investments work on building organizations, not only at local and community level, but also globally.
