The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk, in northern Poland, who was seriously injured by a knife at a charity concert, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, said a senior official medical.
Mayor Pawel Adamowicz was stabbed several times on Sunday by a man who claimed to have been wrongly accused and imprisoned. Known as Stefan W., the attacker went to the scene at an annual charity event to raise money for Polish medical institutions. The assault took place in front of a crowd of people. The knife then grabbed the microphone, accusing the mayor's party, The Civil Platform, of his alleged trial.
Adamowicz, 53, was seriously injured in the heart, diaphragm and abdominal organs. He had to be revived on stage before being hospitalized. He underwent emergency surgery and was placed in intensive care. "In a very critical state" Jerzy Karpinski, doctor of the regional health department of Gdansk, told the Polish press agency PAP. Adamowicz succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
Minister of the Interior Joachim Brudzinski called the knife "A recidivist who has been found guilty of armed robbery", in a Twitter post, denying that there was a political motive behind the incident. Stefan W. has been charged with homicide, confirmed a spokesman for the Polish prosecutor's office.
The 27-year-old gunman, himself living in Gdansk, was wearing a press badge, the police said, explaining how he managed to get to the scene.

The assalant was sentenced to five and a half years of imprisonment and was released at the end of December, Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro told reporters. He added that the man had unsuccessfully applied for parole three times before finally serving his sentence.
Prosecutor Krzysztof Sierak said the knife was currently about to undergo a psychiatric examination. However, he has apparently been found mentally unstable in the past.
"During his term of imprisonment, near his end, a psychiatrist examined this person. It was detected that he was in remission of a serious [mental] disorder … That did not stop him from serving his sentence until the end, " A representative of the Polish Penitentiary Service told the Sputnik news agency.
