The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk, in northern Poland, is in critical condition after a violent knife attack in the middle of a charity concert. A man ran to the platform and stabbed the official, claiming revenge for an injustice.
The horrific incident occurred during an annual charity event to raise money for Polish medical institutions. As the concert drew to a close, the attacker rushed to the scene and assaulted Mayor Pawel Adamowicz by stabbing him several times in front of the crowd.
The videos posted on social media seem to show the moments that followed the shocking attack. Apparently, everything went so fast that most people did not even realize what was going on; many could be seen waving their hands and their phones to music.
The attacker remained on the scene and continued to walk, hands raised. He also grabbed the microphone and asserted that he had committed the attack because he had previously been "wrongfully accused" and had served his sentence in prison.

The aggressor was finally mastered by the guards and handed over to the police.
Adamowicz had to be woken up, local media reported. According to his correspondent on the spot, Radio Gdansk reportedly said that the attacker had targeted the heart and had apparently pierced the aorta of his victim. The official was taken to the hospital, where he was operated on urgently. His condition remains critical.
The shocking attack, unprecedented in the European city, has led to immediate condemnation, even from the mayor's biggest political rivals. Acknowledging that they had political differences with Adamowicz, President Andrzej Duda said that "Today, I am unconditionally with him and his loved ones, as I hope all compatriots. I pray for his return to health and all his strength. "
